I am always surprised when a job seeker comes to a job interview with no questions to ask the employer. Asking the employer the right questions leaves a lasting impression; especially if the questions are well thought out and relevant to the company or position. This being said, company research prior to a job interview is vital.
So how do you start the research? Here are a few points to get you started:
- First and foremost start with the company website. This is the single best resource to get most of the information you will need about the company. Scroll through all the pages within the website. The company is providing you all the information you need, all you have to do is take the time to read it.
- If a company does not have its own website use the search engines to find other internet sites that provide information about the company. Simply type in the company name and use the different search engines to go to any sites that refer to the company (e.g. Reviews, forums, like companies, press releases etc.)
- Visit online company specific message boards. These message boards provide opinions of current and former employees and give personal perspectives on the company. Make sure there is more then one message and from various people before making any assumptions.
- Check out competitor websites to get information current developments in the company’s industry or sector.
- The public library is another good place to find company information. Search the company in the business periodical index to find articles in business publications and industry trade magazines.
- Remember the company mission, vision and values statements. This tells you about the company culture in a nutshell. Use this information to underline why you would be a good fit for the position.
- Find the company’s strategic goals, special projects and new developments. This can be found on the site, phoning the receptionist or walking in to pick up information on-site prior to the job interview.
Taking this research with you to the job interview will show the interviewer that you have taken the time and trouble to find out about the company beforehand. The research will also help you prepare potential questions you may be asked during the job interview.
